SS304 vs SS316 Pipe Fittings: What to Specify
SS304 and SS316 are stainless steel grades. SS316 contains molybdenum, which generally improves resistance to pitting in chloride environments. Select the grade against the actual fluid, temperature, cleaning chemicals and design specification; neither grade suits every application.
What is the practical difference?
SS304 is commonly used in general stainless steel pipework. SS316 offers additional resistance in some corrosive environments because of its molybdenum content. Grade alone does not establish pressure rating, hygienic suitability or service life. Manufacturing standard, dimensions, surface finish and joint design also matter.
Does a dairy or pharma line always need SS316?
No universal grade recommendation is appropriate. Product-contact requirements, cleaning cycles, chloride exposure and the process specification determine the material. Ask the plant engineer to confirm whether SS304, SS316, a low-carbon variant or another material is specified.
What should an enquiry include?
Provide the required grade, fitting type, size, tube or pipe standard, wall thickness, connection type, quantity and any certificate requirements. For hygienic fittings, include the applicable dimensional standard and surface-finish requirement.
Can SS304 and SS316 parts be mixed?
A matching nominal size is insufficient. Check the dimensional standard, weld requirements, corrosion implications and project specification before combining components. Request material identification and certificates where specified.
